Nothing Else Matters

This week for Song-Lyric Sunday, Helen asks us to think of a our first concert. My first concert was when I was fifteen. Metallica played a two hour show in San Francisco in 1991, and I was scared nearly to death. Not because of the music, but being stuck in a sea of people was the most terrifying.

Before the show started, everyone was sitting on the concrete floor for some reason while they were waiting for the band. So, my brother and I sat down too. All of a sudden there was a boom up on the stage area, then everyone rushed the stage. I was lifted off my feet by a bunch of burly guys. One guy in front of me who was as skinny as me, glared at me with evil eyes and a cocked elbow. He thought about it, but thankfully he didn’t give me a bloody nose.

Finally, after a long wait, the stadium was swallowed by darkness. Metallica appeared on the stage and gave an incredible show.

Their self-titled album, also known as the Black Album, was released in 1991. Here is a song from that album called Nothing Else Matters.

[HETFIELD/ULRICH/HAMMET]

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don’t just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don’t just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No nothing else matters

  1. LOVE Metallica! I have to say that’s a recent love-affair for me though. I just didn’t get it when I was younger. It took my daughter to change my mind in the type of music I listen to now. My brother, however, is a die-hard fan. The last concert he went to took days to recover from; he was bruised all over from being pushed up against the gate. I guess that’s what you get for front row. 🙂

I would love to see them in concert, but I loved reading your experience here. Thanks so much for sharing!

  2. This is a really fun slice of life (and nicely written as well). I haven’t heard of the song-lyric Sunday but I look forward to giving it a try someday. I look forward to more of your posts. Following you now 🙂
